Balding Waits On Duretto News

Andrew Balding faces a nervous wait on Duretto’s fitness ahead of next Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup. The six-year-old looked good in his recent fourth place finish in the Caulfield Cup and the Chester Stakes winner appeared primed for the Flemington showpiece.

However, he was found to be lame following a track gallop on Saturday and while scans on Tuesday did not show any serious issues, Duretto has been kept at the University of Melbourne Equine Centre as a precaution.

Balding will now be hoping for good news ahead of a meeting with vets which will determine if the son of Manduro is ready to race.

The stewards’ report on www.racingvictoria.com.au read: “Racing Victoria stewards advise that bone scans conducted today on the Andrew Balding-trained Duretto at the University of Melbourne Equine Centre have not presented any identifiable issues with the horse.

“UoM veterinarians will, however, keep Duretto at the Equine Centre overnight and conduct further examinations tomorrow to help determine why the horse was lame in its left foreleg following a track gallop at the Werribee International Horse Centre last Saturday.”
