Cavendish Confirms Cycling Break

Britain’s Mark Cavendish has revealed he is to take a period away from cycling because of illness. The 33-year-old Manxman will be taking an indefinite break “due to the presence of Epstein-Barr virus”, his Dimension Data team has confirmed.
Cavendish was first diagnosed with EBV in April 2017 but returned to action at the Tour of Slovenia just two months later.

However, the 2011 world road race champion has since been unknowingly training with EBV, which can cause glandular fever, through this year.
Now the experienced rider will be taking some time away from the saddle for an indefinite period as he looks to get back a clean bill of health.

“This season I’ve not felt physically myself,” Cavendish said. “Despite showing good numbers on the bike I have felt that there’s been something not right.
“I’m glad to now finally have some clarity as to why I haven’t been able to perform at my optimum level during this time.”
