Chelsea Star Sets Sights On Spain Spot

Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa hopes to challenge David de Gea for the number one spot for Spain. Kepa joined the Blues in a world-record £71.6million move from Athletic Bilbao and the 23-year-old has impressed in his brief time in London so far, managing two clean sheets in four Premier League outings.

“I’m getting used to my new life: a new city, new team, but it’s been positive because when things start well on the pitch, it makes everything easier,” he told the London Evening Standard.

He added: “Why did I choose Chelsea? It is a great club, who in recent years have won the Champions League, Europa League, the Premier League — it’s a team with great players.”

Manchester United’s De Gea came in for criticism in his homeland for his below-par displays at the World Cup this summer and there have been calls for a change in custodian by the Spanish press and fans.

Kepa offered his fellow shot-stopper his support, but admitted he is keen to take his place as the number one for La Roja ahead of their Nations League clash with England on Saturday.

He said: “It’s a question for the coach [Luis Enrique], although obviously we all want to play.

“De Gea is a great goalkeeper and the goal is perfectly covered with him. The World Cup was how it was, we came back too early, but I don’t pay attention to polls or what people say. I try to isolate myself and focus on myself.”
