Napoli defender Vlad Chiriches is facing a lengthy absence after it was confirmed he has suffered anterior cruciate ligament damage. The 28-year-old Romania international, who joined the Serie A side from Tottenham in summer 2015, suffered the injury to his knee while representing his country against Montenegro.
His nation’s coach Cosmin Contra said it looked like a serious injury at the time and Chiriches subsequently returned to Napoli to have the knee further examined.
And, following tests by Professor Mariani at the Villa Stuart clinic in Rome on Monday morning, the severity of the injury was revealed and he could go under the knife as early as this afternoon.
It is likely that Chiriches will be out of Napoli coach Carlo Ancelotti’s plans for the remainder of the 2018-19 season.
