Manchester City are reported to be lining up a bid for Real Madrid central defender Raphael Varane and are ready to break the bank. Reports in the Spanish press claim that City boss Pep Guardiola will be handed a £407million transfer budget for next season and Varane is now at the top of his wanted list.
The City boss is well aware that he will one day have to replace Vincent Kompany and 25-year-old Varane is seen as the perfect player to be his long-term successor.
Varane has been a revelation at the Bernabeu and has often been linked with a move to Manchester United as Jose Mourinho knows him well, but now City are also said to be in the hunt.
Real are unlikely to entertain the idea of letting the France international move on but that will not stop City from making a bid to try and lure him away.
The reports in the Spanish press also claim that City could have to go as high as £180million before Real would even entertain the idea of doing a deal.
