Cullen Explains Loan Call

West Ham youngster Josh Cullen believes his latest loan move away from the club will benefit his development. The 22-year-old was part of Manuel Pellegrini’s summer plans and the Chilean made no secret of his eagerness to keep hold of him, encouraging the youngster to fight for a first-team place.

Cullen has previously spent time on loan at Bradford and Bolton and after receiving offers from elsewhere, chose to join Charlton until the end of the season.

The Republic of Ireland under-21 international is currently away with the national team but after providing an assist on debut in the recent 2-1 win at Southend, will hope to reclaim his place for the Addicks on Saturday at former club, the Bantams.

With opportunities expected to be limited with the Hammers, Cullen says a move away on loan was always going to be the best move for his progression.

“I needed to be playing games,” he told the club’s website. “Manuel Pellegrini was very supportive of me, saying I could stay around and try to push for my opportunity. But I couldn’t hold on to see how results went.”
