Any hopes South African fans may have had that AB de Villiers would return to the Proteas side for the World Cup have been dashed. The former South African skipper plays T20 club and franchise cricket around the world but has retired from the international game.
However, reports surfaced in India suggesting he was considering a return to the Proteas side in time for the World Cup next year in England.
Before too many people got excited at the thought, De Villiers has made it clear coming out of international retirement is not going to happen and claims he was misunderstood when he said “never say never” when asked about a return.
“No‚ there is no comeback‚” he said during the official launch of the Tshwane Spartans franchise he will be captaining during the Mzansi Super League.
“I made the mistake of saying ‘never say never’‚ which is a philosophy that I have always followed in my life.
“I was actually trying to say that I am focusing on the now but it came out horribly wrong and the next minute there were headlines around the world.”
