Delpo Confirms Latest Setback

Juan Martin del Potro could be forced to call time on his season after confirming he has fractured his knee cap.

Del Potro retired from his third-round match with eventual finalist Borna Coric and has subsequently undergone tests to assess the damage.

It has been decided that the Argentine has sustained a fracture on his right patella and could now be out for the season.

The 30-year-old has enjoyed a strong run of results, reaching back-to-back finals of both the US Open and China Opens, and currently sits third in the Race to London ahead of November’s ATP World Tour Finals at the O2 Arena.

Delpo is currently in a splint in a bid to help his recovery and he admits the injury comes as a big blow after finally appearing to regain full fitness following numerous setbacks throughout his career.

“It’s a very difficult moment,” he told the ATP website. “I feel very sad. It’s a hard blow that leaves me without strength. It’s very difficult for me to think about recovery again, I did not expect this to happen.”

The ATP say that doctors will “evaluate the recovery process in the coming days”, although he could now choose to skip the remaining weeks of the season to ensure he is ready for the 2018 Australian Open, which starts on January 14.
