Shane Duffy has apologised to the Brighton fans for his sending off in Tuesday’s 3-1 victory against Crystal Palace. The Republic of Ireland defender appeared to push his head towards Patrick van Aanholt and with him only yards away from referee Kevin Friend, the official had no option but to brandish the red card.
That came with Brighton 1-0 up thanks to Glenn Murray’s penalty and they doubled their lead immediately after Duffy’s dismissal, his replacement Leon Balogun fired home with his first touch.
Florin Andone made it 3-0 by the break and despite a Luka Milivojevic penalty, the Seagulls secured a second straight win after beating Huddersfield over the weekend.
Balogun is likely to start the next three games against Burnley, Chelsea and Bournemouth and the man he replaces, Duffy, admits there were no excuses for his behaviour. Duffy wrote on Twitter: “Can only apologise to everyone tonight for letting use [sic] down. I’m disappointed in myself for even getting myself into the situation.”
