Duo Suffer Shanghai Surprise Exits

Nick Kyrgios and Stan Wawrinka were two of the big-name casualties to crash out of the Shanghai Masters in the first round on Monday. Australia’s Kyrgios has endured a nightmare time at the Chinese tournament in the past as he was hit with a suspension for eight ATP tournament weeks because of his behaviour during the second-round defeat against Mischa Zverev in 2016.

He was then fined after he quit his first-round tie against Steve Johnson last year after losing the opening set.
There was no controversy this time as the 23-year-old lasted just 78 minutes on the court, having been beaten 4-6 6-4 6-3 by American qualifier and world number 104 Bradley Klahn.

Kyrgios will now drop to a lowly 38th place in the world rankings, his lowest position since February 2016.
Meanwhile, three-time Grand Slam champion Wawrinka also fell at the first hurdle as he crashed out 4-6 6-4 6-3 against 13th seed Borna Coric, who will now face Klahn in round two.

Former world number three Milos Raonic was another big player to go out after he lost 6-3 5-7 6-3 against qualifier Mackenzie McDonald.
