Edmund Impresses In North Carolina

Kyle Edmund continued his preparations for next week’s US Open by booking his place in the quarter-finals of the Winston-Salem Open. The British number one, who is the third seed in North Carolina, recorded a straight-sets 7-5 7-5 victory over Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena to book his place in the last eight and he will now face American Steve Johnson on Wednesday.

Edmund will be looking to enjoy a successful week at Wake Forest University, as this is his final tournament before the US Open gets underway and he showed great patience to beat Carballes Baena, as he had to wait until the 11th game of the opening set to secure the decisive break.

It was a familiar story for the 23-year-old in the second set as well, as, after squandering three earlier break points, he again broke his opponent in the 11th game before serving out for the victory.

The world number 16 will now fancy his chances of beating Johnson, who recorded a straight-sets victory over Jaume Munar to book his place in the quarter-finals, as he has won his last two meetings with the American.

The other quarter-final matches will see Daniil Medvedev take on Ryan Harrison, Nicolas Jarry face Taro Daniel and Chung Hyeon go up against second seed Pablo Carreno Busta, with the winner of the latter match set to face Edmund or Johnson in the semi-finals.
