Mohamed Elyounoussi is set to miss Southampton’s Premier League trip to Everton on Saturday because of a hamstring injury. The 24-year-old Swiss international, who joined the Saints from Basel in the summer, suffered the problem following his debut appearance in last Sunday’s goalless draw against Burnley at St Mary’s and he is set to sit out at Goodison Park.
Fellow summer arrival Stuart Armstrong also suffered a knock against the Clarets but he is expected to feature in the game.
Danny Ings made a substitute appearance last weekend and will be pushing for his first league start against his former club Liverpool’s Merseyside rivals. It’s just three months ago that Southampton conceded a stoppage-time equaliser at Everton which left their top-flight status hanging by a thread.
They recovered from the 1-1 draw to avoid relegation on the final day of the season.
“It was a difficult one. The abiding memory for me was the disappointment for the players themselves because they put in such a huge effort to get us over the line,” said Hughes.
“It felt like a harsh blow because of how we performed in the game but the impressive thing for me was how we recovered.
“We could have felt at that moment we weren’t going to stay in the Premier League but to a man they used it as motivation.”
