England Suffer Burgess KO

Sam Burgess says he is “gutted” to be missing England’s Test series against New Zealand due to injury.

The South Sydney forward, who switched codes to Rugby Union to play for Bath from 2014-2015, was initially named in Wayne Bennett’s 24-man squad on Tuesday for the home series against the Kiwis.

However, the 29-year-old, who has won 23 caps for England and scored eight tries, will not make the trip to the UK after revealing he requires surgery to fix shoulder and wrist injuries.

“I’m gutted that I have had to withdraw from these matches as I love playing for my country and it is a great honour,” Burgess said.

“The reality of the situation is that it’s imperative that I get these surgeries done, and with a view to the next three or four years, I need to get them done now.

“I’ll be watching on from Australia and cheering on England against France and New Zealand, and I’m sure the team will do England proud.”

England take on France on October 17 at Leigh Sports Village before the three-Test series against New Zealand gets underway at Hull’s KCOM Stadium on October 27.
