Farrell Given Stand-Off Nod

Owen Farrell has been given the number 10 jersey for England ahead of Saturday’s Test against South Africa at Twickenham. The Red Rose kick-off their autumn internationals against the Springboks, with head coach Eddie Jones making a number of changes to his side from their tour of South Africa over the summer.

Farrell gets a start at fly-half, with George Ford settling for a spot on the bench alongside his Leicester Tigers team-mate Manu Tuilagi, who is poised to make a long-awaited return to the international stage after a host of injuries.

Ben Te’o is a surprising inclusion at inside centre after playing less than 30 minutes of rugby this season for Worcester Warriors.

The biggest changes come in the back-row, with Tom Curry, Brad Shields and Mark Wilson all named in the starting XV.

Jones is looking forward to their autumn opener and feels the team’s warm-weather camp in Portugal has served them well. “We’ve become very well organised in our set-piece and have done a lot of good work in Portugal over the last week,” said Jones.

“We have put in a new defence system and our attack looks more organised than it was on the South Africa tour.

“Against South Africa you have got the physical battle up front and then you have to be tactically smart in how you attack against them.

“We need to find ways to gain momentum, then once we find momentum, convert that to points.”
