Prop Andrew Fifita says he was proud to lead Tonga’s war cry during their Test against Australia. The Cronulla Sharks star speaks very little Tongan but he was tasked with leading the Sipi Tau on Saturday.
Fifita defected from Australia last year but he admits he also sang the Aussie national anthem during their meeting at a sold-out Mt Smart Stadium.
The 29-year-old was unable to help Tonga win, with Australia securing a 34-16 victory. However, he insists the experience was extremely humbling and he is determined to help Tonga grow on the international stage.
He told TVNZ: “It was very humbling, I sang both national anthems. It was amazing. The atmosphere proved we really respected the opposition. You could hear the crowd singing our anthem and the Australian anthem as well.
“Our thing now is to build towards the next World Cup. Especially knowing our calendar next year. I know we have New Zealand for the next three years in the mid-year Test.
“And we have two games after the (International) Nines next year. We’re quite excited. We’re moving in the right direction.”
