Froome Believes He Can Race Till 2023

Chris Froome says he’s driven by the prospect of winning the Tour de France five times and believes he can race for another five years.

The Briton has enjoyed superb success in recent years, winning the Tour de France four times in 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017, while he also won his first Giro d’Italia title in May and triumphed in the Vuelta a Espana in 2017.

The 33-year-old believes he can keep going at the top of cycling until 2023 and admits wearing the Yellow Jersey in Paris for a fifth time to emulate some of the greats in the sport inspires him to continue.

Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Froome said: “I am convinced that I can keep going for another five years – so up to 38 years old. “But it must be at top level. I think that few riders can handle my training regime – maybe no-one. My workouts are very intense. I always try to push my limits.”

The Team Sky racer is as committed as ever to compete for the big prizes and says he is always striving to improve, even though now he’s well into his 30s.

He added: “By constantly looking up your limit and going over it, you can increase your volume. You have to find it normal, as it were, to push your boundaries. I always want to become better as a cyclist. It is a kind of obsession. I am therefore fully committed to it. I really want to know every detail.

“The Tour is the best way to measure your worth as a rider. I can’t deny that the five victories are an objective. “I want to join the special club with (Jacques) Anquetil, (Bernard) Hinault, (Miguel) Indurain and (Eddy) Merckx.”
