The Spaniard, who led by one stroke at the halfway stage, carded three birdies and two bogeys in his one-under-par effort and is in pole position on 10 under to win back-to-back events after claiming the Andalucia Valderrama Masters on his last start.

Garcia, 38-year-old has been at the top of the leaderboard at the conclusion of every round to date but will have some big-name players snapping at his heels during the final 18 holes.

Home favourite Louis Oosthuizen could only manage a level-par 72 for his third round but is just two back on eight-under while Belgium’s Thomas Detry made his move with a round of 68 to sit on seven-under.

He was joined on that mark but England’s Lee Westwood, whose 69 included five birdies and two bogeys, and Finland’s Mikko Korhonen, who shot 71.

In tough conditions, Englishman Ross Fisher signed for the lowest round of the day, mixing four birdies with one eagle and a bogey to move up to sixth position on six-under.

South Africa’s Darren Fichardt is a further stroke back but it was another day to forget for Rory McIlroy, who added a 73 to rounds of 72 and 71 and is out of contention on level par.
