Giovinazzi Lands Sauber Drive

Italian Antonio Giovinazzi will partner Kimi Raikkonen at Sauber next season, with Marcus Ericsson losing his drive. Giovinazzi had recently been tipped to move to the Swiss outfit and it has now been confirmed that it will be an all-new line-up in 2019 after Raikkonen’s switch from Ferrari.

The 24-year-old has been placed at Sauber by Ferrari, as he is a member of their young driver programme and he knocks Sweden’s Ericsson, who will become the team’s third driver, out of his seat.

Giovinazzi raced twice for Sauber at the start of 2017 as a stand-in for Pascal Wehrlein but will now have a whole season to go at next year, and the youngster could not hide his excitement at the appointment.

“I am delighted to be joining the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team. This is a dream come true, and it is a great pleasure to have the chance to race for this team,” he said.

“As an Italian, it is a huge honour for me to represent a brand as iconic and successful as Alfa Romeo in our sport.

“I would like to thank the Scuderia Ferrari and the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team for giving me this great opportunity. I am very motivated and cannot wait to start working towards achieving great results together.”
