Giroud Enjoying Morata Battle

Olivier Giroud says he and Alvaro Morata will benefit from their battle to earn a regular spot in the Chelsea attack. The Frenchman got the nod in Saturday’s 4-1 win over Cardiff and provided a pair of assists for Eden Hazard’s first two goals, as the Belgian eventually completed a hat-trick.

Giroud had previously had to wait his turn behind Morata, who started the season as the number nine following his colleague’s late return from the World Cup.

With the Europa League getting underway on Thursday, both players are likely to see plenty of minutes and the 31-year-old believes the competition to lead line can help them push each other on to greater heights this season.

“At the beginning of the season I came back very late after the World Cup and obviously I had to be very patient and wait to be at a decent physical level,” Giroud told the club’s official website. “The coach said he wasn’t going to change too much until the end of August, he was clear about that.

“Alvaro did very well at the beginning of the season, he did the full pre-season so to me it was only fair and normal that he started the season. It’s always been a fair competition between us so now we will try to both step up and help the team achieve our targets.

“I’m happy to have a team-mate like that to always push me to do better and better. I’m sure it’s positive for both of us but obviously I want to play as many games as I can and I will try to be as efficient as I can for the team.”
