Trainer John Gosden has praised the performance of Roaring Lion after landing Wednesday’s Juddmonte International in York. Roaring Lion came into the Ebor Festival on the back of his Coral-Eclipse victory at Sandown Park – his second win of the year after his triumph at York in May – and he produced another brilliant performance to land the spoils in Yorkshire.
The three-year-old grey’s turn of foot on the way home proved too much for favourite Poet’s Word, who ended up second, and the Qatar Racing Limited-owned charge won comfortably.
Huge credit also has to be given to 50/1 shot Thundering Blue, who managed to finish in third place despite losing two shoes during the race.
Roaring Lion becomes Gosden’s first success in the race, having previously failed to saddle a winner, and he expressed his delight at the performance.
“He’s run a lovely race. They went a very honest pace – you had a Dubai World Cup winner in there – and Poet’s Word came and ran a blinder; there were no hiding places out there,” he was quoted as the Racing Post.
“We’re delighted with our horse. I was expecting a big performance and I got one. He’s got better through the season, bigger and stronger. He was tricky to train, but he’s improved since.”
