Gracia Embracing Cup Competitions

Watford boss Javi Gracia has spoken of the importance of the Carabao Cup ahead of their second-round clash with Reading on Wednesday. The Hornets head to the Madejski Stadium following a perfect start to the season, having won their opening three matches in the Premier League to join Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham in the top four.

Some top-flight managers regard the Carabao Cup as a distraction from the bread and butter of the league and Gracia could be forgiven for thinking along those lines after their fine start to the campaign, but he insists he is embracing the competition and is hoping to enjoy a sustained cup run.

“For me all the competitions are important,” Gracia told the club website. “Not only the Premier League. I think it’s the best way to always do our best, all the focus is on the next game, the next competition now, we are playing Carabao Cup and trying to do our best and trying to get a good result and continue playing games in this competition.”

Gracia will use the clash with Reading to utilise members of his squad that have not featured too much over the opening weeks of the season and he has urged those players to seize their chance.

“It’s a chance for other players and to show they are in a good moment as well, instead of not playing in the Premier League,” he added. “I would like to play more games in the Carabao Cup and in the FA Cup, I like these competitions as well.”
