Gunnarsson Misses Training Ahead Of Belgium Clash

Cardiff City midfielder Aron Gunnarsson sat out training on Tuesday, 48 hours ahead of Iceland’s Nations League clash with Belgium. The Iceland captain strolled around the outside of the pitch as his team-mates took part in training for the League A clash.

Gunnarsson is currently managing the amount of strain he puts on his knee after only recently returning to first-team duty at Cardiff – and that means he skips quite a few training sessions.

He should still play for Iceland on Thursday even though they are pointless after three matches and certain to drop down to League B, leaving Belgium and Switzerland to contest the group.

Gunnarsson struggled to regain full fitness after playing with an injury at the World Cup, so it is the first time the 29-year-old has been included in new Iceland coach Erik Hamren’s squad. “It has been strange to be out of group,” he admitted. “While I’ve been out injured, I’ve had to stay on the outside of the group the last two times.

“It has been difficult to be at such a distance and can not have any effect. It was harder than I thought to see the guys trying to win for the national team.”
