Gunnarsson Could Make Welcome City Return

Aron Gunnarsson could make his first Cardiff appearance since May when the Bluebirds host Fulham on Saturday in a crunch clash. The Iceland international, who has been sidelined by an ankle injury, could come in for suspended Joe Ralls alongside Harry Arter in midfield.

“Aron is a leader, he’s good to have around, a calming influence if you like,” said manager Neil Warnock. “And I’m going to leave it to him, I’m not going to put any pressure on him.

“He’s got that aura about him(Gunnarsson) that we’ve missed. So I’ll definitely play him if he thinks he’s alright. But he’s got to be sensible on that.

“We’re trying to coax him through. Whether he will start or on the bench, we’ll decide that later on.”

Arter is walking a disciplinary tightrope after picking up four yellow cards this season and Warnock has wondered aloud if the midfielder might be better off getting his suspension out of the way as soon as possible.

“Harry is on four bookings so I don’t want him to get booked tomorrow because otherwise he’ll be missing Liverpool,” he added. “But then I think ‘maybe just let him get booked if he wants and miss Liverpool’.

“I don’t think you can stop Harry Arter, though, he does what he wants really. So we’re a bit short in that area and we’re looking at improving the midfield area in January, along with a striker and a defender.”

Goalkeeper Alex Smithies will return to the bench after being laid low by a shoulder problem but striker Gary Madine is struggling with a virus.
