Promoter Eddie Hearn says an eagerly-awaited fight between British duo Amir Khan and Kell Brook should take place next spring.
Matchroom Sport promoter Hearn, like both fighters, wants to see the bout happen and he says there is a rough plan in place for them to get together in the ring in either March or May of next year, but the showdown is far from finalised.
The two rivals have been shaping for a battle for some time but have both had to overcome setbacks in order for the all-British match-up to be ratified and it remains to be seen if they will be able to agree to a 2019 clash, with the venue likely to be a top stadium in the UK to satisfy fans’ demands if it does get the go-ahead.
Khan lost to Canelo Alvarez in 2016 but has since begun to rebuild his reputation with an easy win over Phil Lo Greco, before he eventually sealed a tough victory against Samuel Vargas in September and he’s made no secret of the fact he wants to take on Brook soon.
However, the Sheffield star is also in the process of trying to get back to his best after damaging defeats to Gennady Golovkin and Errol Spence Jr over the past few years and he takes on Michael Zerafa in December as he steps up again following his comeback win in March over Sergey Rabchenko.
Hearn is waiting to see how Brook looks when he’s next in the ring next month but, if all goes well, a meeting with Khan could be agreed for the spring. “I think early March is the date that is sort of penciled at the moment,” Hearn told Sky Sports.
“I’ve seen the footage where apparently Amir shook his hand and said ‘Trust me, it’s happening’. Hopefully it is. It’s just whether it goes early March, or late May.”
