Herbert Takes Portugal Lead

Lucas Herbert produced a bogey-free round to open up a one-shot lead after day one of the Portugal Masters. World number 158 Herbert started from the 10th tee at Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course and he ripped up the back nine, making four birdies and one eagle to reach the turn in just 30 shots.

The Australian, who is still searching for his maiden European Tour title, produced fewer fireworks on his final nine holes but he did manage to record another two birdies, which helped him sign for a fantastic eight-under-par 63.

Englishman Matt Wallace, who is going for win number four this season, is in a three-way share of second on -7, alongside compatriot Eddie Pepperell and Irishman Shane Lowry.

China’s Haotong Li is in sole possession of fifth place on -6, two shots off the pace, while Spaniard Sergio Garcia is part of a group of 10 players that are a further stroke off the lead on -5.

English trio David Howell, Ashley Chesters and Gian-Marco Petrozzi, Australian Jason Scrivener, Finnish pair Mikko Korhonen and Kim Koivu, Italian Renato Paratore and Frenchmen Raphael Jacquelin and Adrien Saddier all signed for rounds of 66 to sit alongside Europe’s 2018 Ryder Cup member.
