Jake Hesketh admits he is hoping to impress Southampton during his loan spell with Burton Albion. The 22-year-old midfielder is currently on loan at the League One outfit and has produced some eye-catching displays, scoring two goals in 16 appearances across all competitions, including what proved to be the winning goal in their recent Carabao Cup triumph over Nottingham Forest.
Hesketh is certainly enjoying his spell at the Pirelli Stadium, although he admits his main aim is to catch the eye of Saints boss Mark Hughes and earn a first-team chance with Southampton when he returns to St Mary’s Stadium.
“For them (Southampton) looking, they’ll see me getting the ball to feet – it’s how they’re going to play and how it is up there (in the Premier League,” Hesketh was quoted as saying by the Daily Echo. “So that’s what I need to show I am able to do.
“The experience of playing League football benefits you regardless, I think. But coming and playing that kind of way has a bigger impact as well.”
Hesketh, who has figured twice for Southampton in the Premier League, is due to return to St Mary’s in January, but he believes his best chance of becoming a long-term fixture in Hughes’ side is by sticking with Burton for the rest of this season.
He added: “I’m happy, I want to stay, I’m playing football and I’m enjoying myself.”
