Hughton Unsure About Red Card Appeal

Brighton manager Chris Hughton says he doesn’t know if he will appeal against Dale Stephens’ red card. English midfielder Stephens was shown a straight red in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Cardiff City for a tackle on Greg Cunningham and the dismissal had a big impact on the match, with the scores locked at 1-1 at the time of the incident.

Hughton believes the 29-year-old was harshly given his marching orders although the manager is unsure whether he will lodge an appeal to try and get the suspension overturned. “The more I saw it I think it’s harsh but, if we have a rule that somebody shows their studs, then they have to send everybody off on every occasion,” he told the Argus.

“There was minimal contact on the player. Yes, his studs were showing but not showing early. I think he probably made contact with the ball first before his studs were showing. “At this moment we have to digest it and think about making those decisions.

That’s the other side of it. It put us down to 10 men for the majority of the game but it also means we will miss a key player for a period of games.”

Brighton, who return to action on November 24 at home to Leicester City, are already without the injured Davy Propper and Pascal Gross whilst fellow midfielder Beram Kayal is a booking away from a suspension.
