I Hope Ashley Can Be More Sensible – Rafa

Rafael Benitez hopes owner Mike Ashley “can be more sensible” after opting to end his self-imposed exile from attending Newcastle matches. After a 16-month absence, Ashley was back in attendance at Selhurst Park on Saturday to see his side draw 0-0 with Crystal Palace, collecting only their second point of the Premier League season.

Benitez was frustrated at the lack of incoming transfers at Mike Ashley in the summer and he hinted that Ashley watching the team would help him realise new recruits are needed – Newcastle sit in the relegation zone after six games.

Quizzed about Ashley’s presence, Benitez said: “I have to take this as a positive. If he comes to see the team, he can see the players, what we have, and hopefully he can be more sensible, and he will be ready to do something if we need to do it.”

The Spaniard, whose current contract runs out at the end of the season, added: “I like to see the owner supporting the team. It’s not me, it’s the team.

“We have to be sure that everybody supports the team starting with the owner and everyone. If it’s like that, I’ve said before, we will be stronger.”

Newcastle will again look to secure their first win of the campaign when they host Leicester on Saturday.
