Southampton are without the ineligible Danny Ings against Liverpool and Manolo Gabbiadini is an injury doubt. Saints travel to Anfield in the Premier League hoping to become the first side to stop the Reds this season, but they will have to do it without striker Ings, who is ineligible to face his parent club while on loan.
Boss Mark Hughes’ options up front could be further hit if Gabbiadini is ruled out with a hamstring injury although there are no other injury or suspension worries.
Hughes knows it will be a severe test against Jurgen Klopp’s side although he is approaching the match with confidence as he believes Saints are in good form themselves.
He said on the club’s website: “We’re looking forward to it. It’s a big test, we all understand that, it’s not an easy place to go under any circumstances.
“At the moment they seem to be in a rich vein of form, playing exceptionally well and getting results so it’s not going to be easy for us, but I don’t think that should give us any apprehension.
“We’ve got to go there, be positive and see where it takes us. The importance from our point of view is that, in my view, we’re playing ok. We’re on the back of three games unbeaten so if you’re going to go to Anfield you need to go with confidence in what you’re trying to do.”
Hughes added:”That’s what we’ll try and show on the day. It’s important that we continue to progress and keep building our own performances – if we do that then we’ll be fine.”
