Ireland Seal Historic Victory

Ireland put on a superb performance to claim a first-ever victory over New Zealand on home soil on Saturday evening. The top-two ranked teams in the world met at the Aviva Stadium for what was always expected to be a tense affair.

Both sides failed to cross the try-line in the first half and had to rely on the kicking game of Jonny Sexton and Beauden Barrett.

Ireland led 9-6 at the break but they pulled clear in the early stages of the second half when Jacob Stockdale gathered his own chip before crossing the white line, while Sexton added the extras.

The hosts were forced back as the period progressed but they held their line impressively and kept the world champions at bay to seal a 16-9 victory.

Ireland’s man of the match Peter O’Mahony: “They’re not the number one team in the world for nothing. We probably had to play our best game of this term and thankfully we managed to do that. “It’s a big piece of history and one that we wanted to tick off here in Ireland and now we have done it.”
