Nikola Kalinic has vowed to fight for his place in the Atletico Madrid side despite the presence of Diego Costa and Antoine Griezmann. The 30-year-old Croatia international was targeted by Atleti coach Diego Simeone as quality back-up to number one strike pairing Costa and Griezmann at the Wanda Metropolitano going into the 2018-19 La Liga campaign.
But Kalinic, who joined for an undisclosed fee from AC Milan, is adamant that he did not make the move merely to watch from the substitutes’ bench.
“Atletico have two of the best strikers in Europe,” Kalinic told reporters.
“Of course I already have lots of respect for them, for their skill and achievements, but there are many matches in a season and I need to earn my right to play.
“This club is all about hard work and going the extra mile, but that is why I have come here – I want to be part of this club and to win trophies.”
