Loris Karius says Jurgen Klopp wanted him to stay at Liverpool before the goalkeeper’s loan move to Besiktas went through on Sunday. Former Germany Under-21 international Karius received huge criticism for his performances last season – especially in the Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid – and the Reds made the decision to sign Alisson from Roma this summer.
The Brazilian has immediately taken the number one jersey and his impressive displays have helped Liverpool win all three Premier League matches this term, lifting the club to top spot in the table.
Having slipped down the pecking order, Karius was desperate to secure a move away and was granted his wish after joining Besiktas on a two-year loan, but he had to persuade Klopp to rubber-stamp the deal.
Speaking at his Besiktas unveiling, the keeper said: “He [Klopp] told me he would like to have me in the squad because he wants to have the best quality players. But I spoke to him and asked him for my wish, it is important to me to play for Besiktas.
“I talked with him for a long time and he understood my situation. I think it was a good deal for everyone. He wished me well but he said he would have liked to keep me.”
