Kohli And Sharma Ease India To Victory

India have beaten the West Indies in the opening match of their ODI series thanks largely to centuries from Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

The hosts won the toss and put the Windies into bat, but despite dismissing Chandrapaul Hemraj inside the first five overs, they were unable to make too many inroads into the tourist’s top order.

Shimron Hetmyer was the star of the show with the bat for the West Indies, as he reached his century off just 74 balls before eventually being dismissed for 106 off the bowling of Ravindrasinh Jadeja.

Kieran Powell (51), Jason Holder (38) and Shai Hope (32) also produced decent knocks as the Windies posted a challenging score of 322-8 off their 50 overs.

India’s response did not start particularly well, as they lost opener Shikhar Dhawan for four, but captain Kohli and Sharma then put the hosts in control of the match before the former was eventually dismissed for 140.

However, the Windies could not get rid of Sharma, who ended the match unbeaten on 152, and he was ably assisted by Ambati Rayudu (22no) as India reached their target with 47 deliveries and eight wickets to spare, closing on 326-2.

India now hold a 1-0 lead heading into the final four matches of the series, with the second ODI scheduled to take place in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday.
