Johanna Konta is out of the Wuhan Open after a straight-sets loss to Australia’s Ashleigh Barty in round one. The British number one has endured a poor year by her recent high standards and now sits 43rd in the world rankings after a season in which she won only two matches in the four Grand Slams.
She would have been hoping for a decent outing in the Far East but went down in one hour 40 minutes on the hard court in China.
It was the Australian-born star’s second loss to Barty this year as she was beaten by the 22-year-old Queenslander in the final of the Nature Valley Open in Nottingham in June.
Konta has won just eight of her 18 matches since reaching that final and looks a shadow of the player who was ranked fourth in the world in the summer of 2017.
Barty was pleased with the result, saying: “We have played a few times and it is always close, but I am happy to come through in straight sets today.”
