Niko Kovac praised his Bayern Munich side for a complete 90-minute performance as they hammered Benfica 5-1 in the Champions League. The Bavarians have failed to hit the high standards they expect on many occasions this season, but they did on Tuesday night as they brushed aside their Portuguese opponents.
Arjen Robben and Robert Lewandowski scored two goals each, while Franck Ribery chipped in as well, much to the delight of Kovac, who was happy to see his side play well for the whole game.
“Everything was on song,” Kovac said. “We defended well and took our chances at the other end. We finally managed to maintain a high performance level throughout the full 90 minutes.
“It may sound strange, but when we play in the Champions League or in the big league games, you can see that my team is capable, but when we come up against the slightly smaller teams, we sometimes don’t play to our full strengths. “We need to play to our best for 90 minutes, as we did today.”
