Kuchar Happy With Mexico Start

Matt Kuchar says he was pleased with his performance on day one of the Mayakoba Classic after moving into a three-way share of the lead. Kuchar, whose last victory came at the 2015 Fiji International, struggled for form last season and he headed into this week’s event at El Camaleon Golf Club off the back of a disappointing tie for 57th at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

However, the American looked back to his best on Thursday when firing seven birdies in a bogey-free round of 64, moving into a three-way share of the lead on -7 alongside Kramer Hickock and Dominic Bozzelli.

The 40-year-old, who has taken his family along with him to Mexico, says the relaxed atmosphere at Playa del Carmen has contributed to his quick start as he aims for an eighth PGA Tour title. “It’s been a little bit of a working vacation,” Kuchar said. “But I had a good time at the office today as well.”

Indian Anirban Lahiri is part of a group of 15 players that are just one stroke behind on -6, with home favourite Abraham Ancer and American Patton Kizzire also on that mark.

Rickie Fowler is a further shot back on -5 and the US star is joined by Pat Perez, Adam Schenk, Russell Henley, Brian Harman, Sungjae Im, Kyoung-Hoon Lee, Oscar Fraustro, Keith Mitchell, James Hahn and Joaquin Niemann.
