Lamela Earns International Recall

Erik Lamela’s strong Spurs form has earned him a recall to the Argentina squad for their double-header against Mexico later this month. The Tottenham star could play his first international game in over two years, having last appeared for La Albiceleste in a World Cup qualifier against Venezuela in 2016 that finished as a 2-2 draw.

Lamela missed out under former Argentina boss Jorge Sampaoli, who took over near the end of the World Cup qualification campaign, but couldn’t get Argentina past last-16 in Russia.

The 26-year-old missed most of last season because of a hip injury, but has returned to prominence with Mauricio Pochettino’s side this term – scoring five goals in 10 games in all competitions for Tottenham this season.

He will be hoping to add to his tally of 23 caps when Argentina play Mexico in Cordoba on November 16 and then again in Mendoza four days later.

And he could be joined in the line-up by Spurs teammate Juan Foyth, who has retained his place in a 30-man squad named by Lionel Scaloni.

The ex-Estudiantes centre-back sat on the bench for Argentina’s 4-0 win over Iraq last month but didn’t get on for his senior international debut.
