Former England head coach Stuart Lancaster has played down rumours linking him to the Leicester Tigers. The Tigers axed Matt O’Connor following the 40-6 defeat against Exeter Chiefs on the opening day of the season and then placed Geordan Murphy in charge on an interim basis.
Murphy then led Leicester to a 49-33 win over Newcastle Falcons at the weekend, and as far as Lancaster is concerned, the man who won 8 Premiership titles with the club, will remain in charge.
“My understanding is that Geordan Murphy has been appointed not just interim coach, he has been appointed the coach for the season,” he said.
Murphy officially remains as the interim head coach but Lancaster’s take on the situation appears to back up what Leicester chief executive Simon Cohen’s said last week.
“There is no intention, unless the wheels completely fall off, to make any further changes. Every opportunity will be given to Geordan to make the most of the role.” Cohen told the BBC.
