Leclerc Thankful For ‘Halo’ In Spa Crash

Sauber’s Charles Leclerc has admitted the ‘halo’ head protection device may have saved him from serious injury in his crash in Belgium. Fernando Alonso’s McLaren landed on top of Leclerc’s Sauber in a spectacular crash in the Belgium GP on Sunday after the former was spun high into the air by Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg on the first corner at Spa.

Leclerc has admitted he was among the drivers who were not in favour of the controversial ‘halo’ head protection when it was introduced to F1, but he conceded after the crash he was glad it helped guard him from what could have been a serious injury.

Leclerc said: “If today it has been useful or not, I don’t know. I don’t know what would have happened without it but in some cases it is definitely helpful.”

While on Twitter, he posted: “Never been a fan of the halo but I have to say that I was very happy to have it over my head today.”

Alonso also believes the device helped guard Leclerc’s head like it was intended to do.

“I saw the replay and how good was the proof for the halo,” he said.

“We didn’t need any proof but it is a good thing.”
