Leno Eyes Lengthy First-Team Run

Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno is determined to maintain his form and keep Petr Cech out of the team. Cech began the season as the Gunners’ number one and has made seven top-flight appearances to date, but a hamstring injury to the Czech ace gave Leno a chance to show what he can do.

The 28-year-old Germany keeper has taken his opportunity and is still operating between the posts despite the fact his colleague is now back to fitness.

It remains to be seen if manager Unai Emery opts to hand the gloves back to the former Chelsea star, but Leno is clearly upbeat about staying in the first-team picture. “I am proud and happy the coach decided on me and I will give my best performances so that won’t change,” he said.

“First of all, it gives me confidence to play in big games like against Liverpool on Saturday. “But I think it pushes us because nobody is safe to play. I think both of us will play many games this season and so the performances have to be good. “I think we push each other every day in training and in the games.”

Arsenal are next in action against Sporting Lisbon in the Europa League on Thursday and it seems likely that Leno will add to his three European appearances for the north Londoners.
