Shane Long will miss the Republic of Ireland’s forthcoming internationals due to a foot injury. The Southampton striker limped off during the second half of his side’s 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday and he has now been left out of Ireland’s squad for the upcoming matches.
Martin O’Neill’s men head to Cardiff to face Wales in their opening UEFA Nations League match on Thursday before travelling to Poland for a friendly next Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Saints keeper Alex McCarthy has joined up with the England squad and Hughes has praised the stopper for his strong start to the season, one which has ensured he has kept Fraser Forster and new signing Angus Gunn out of the side at St Mary’s.
“I think he’s getting better and stronger and showing more leadership,” said Hughes.
“That’s the demand from your number one goalkeeper so you have to have that.”
