‘Lucky’ Nishikori Seeks Big London Week

Kei Nishikori feels he is “lucky” to qualify for the season-ending ATP Finals and is hoping for a solid week in London. The 25-year-old has made it to the O2 Arena courtesy of Juan Martin del Potro’s withdrawal and has been grouped with Roger Federer, Dominic Thiem and Kevin Anderson.

The Japanese ace managed to work his way up the rankings to put himself in contention after a poor start to the year, with a quarter-final appearance at Wimbledon and a march to the last four at the US Open.

Those two runs helped his cause and the 2014 Flushing Meadows finalist would now love to ruffle a few feathers in the capital after sneaking into the eight-man event. “Lucky for me,” he said. “I couldn’t really see that happening at the beginning of the year.

Maybe until Monte Carlo I was playing terribly and didn’t feel like I had any confidence and I wasn’t playing good tennis at that time. “I’m really happy that I’ve been playing really good tennis for the last couple of months after the US Open and I hope I can have one more good week next week here.”
