Romelu Lukaku trained at Carrington on Wednesday, suggesting he could yet feature in Sunday’s derby clash at Manchester City.
The Manchester United striker did not travel to Turin for last night’s memorable 2-1 Champions League comeback victory over Juventus, which leaves Jose Mourinho’s team still in charge of their own fate when it comes to qualifying out of the group.
Lukaku was said to still be struggling with a muscle problem which also saw him miss the weekend Premier League victory at Bournemouth. However, the Belgium international was put through his paces on the training ground on Wednesday and United’s medical staff will now wait to see if he has suffered any type of reaction.
Mourinho stated the injury is not serious and United insiders have suggested the former Chelsea and Everton man did not appear to be majorly impacted when the medics worked with him. Lukaku has had a tough start to the campaign, scoring just four times and he last found the back of the net in the narrow Premier League win over Watford back on September 15.
It seems unlikely at this stage the 25-year-old will lead the line against Pep Guardiola’s league leaders, although Mourinho will certainly be boosted to hear Lukaku is making decent progress and could put himself in contention.
