Mallo Not Motivated By Money

Defender Hugo Mallo has revealed he snubbed a move from Celta Vigo to Fulham as money is not his major motivation in life. The Cottagers were keen to sign the 27-year-old but instead secured a season-long loan deal for Manchester United’s Timothy Fosu-Mensah as Mallo opted to remain at Abanca-Balaidos.
The former Spain Under-21 ace is a one-club man, having come up through the Celta youth ranks to make his debut in 2009, and he has enjoyed 301 outings in all competitions for the Celestes.
It has been reported that the west Londoners were willing to pay the right-back considerably more than he receives with his La Liga club but that was not enough to lure him away from a place that has been home for the best part of two decades.
“I knew the amount I would receive at Fulham, but in life, money isn’t everything and my intention was to continue with Celta,” he said. “That’s why the agreement with the club was easy and very quick.”
It remains to be seen if Mallo ever leaves Celta but it appears that it would be folly for any Premier League side to try and tempt him with cash, as he is a rare breed in today’s game that values loyalty over financial reward.
