Watford defender Adrian Mariappa has described Saturday’s Premier League defeat to Newcastle as “bitterly disappointing”. The Hornets were the first team to lose to Rafael Benitez’ side this season and the 1-0 loss at St James’ Park also brought their own two-match winning run to an end.
Javi Gracia’s side certainly had plenty of opportunities to take something from the game, with defender Mariappa spurning a couple of efforts of his own.
The 32-year-old felt his side were their own worst enemy for not taking some of their chances and he is still scratching his head at how they ended the contest with nothing to show for their efforts.
“It’s bitterly disappointing to come away with nothing,” the former Crystal Palace star told the club website. “I thought we created a lot of chances, and we’ve been punished [for not taking them]. “I’ve had two in quick succession, and probably should have scored both of them.
“All the lads are disappointed because we know we should have done better in front of goal.”
Watford will now be looking to return to winning ways when they travel to St Mary’s Stadium to take on Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday.
