Mature ‘Delpo’ Keen To Take His Chance

Juan Martin del Potro says he was too nervous to enjoy his US Open win in 2009 and is determined to repeat that success.

The Argentine, who has twice been a medalist at the Olympics, looked set to join the biggest names in the sport when he defeated Roger Federer in five sets to win at Flushing Meadows nine years ago.

However, injuries have seen ‘Delpo’ spend more than his fair share of time in the treatment room, most notably undergoing surgeries on both wrists.

After a number of false starts, a semi-final showing in this tournament last year was followed by a last-four outing at the French and Friday sees him face Rafael Nadal for the chance to play in Sunday’s final in New York.

The winner will play either Kei Nishikori or Novak Djokovic in Sunday’s final and having been just 21 when he won his one and only Grand Slam, ‘Delpo’ says he is determined to succeed again as he feels mature enough to enjoy the experience.

“I don’t know if I can get a new one, but I’m doing all my best to try to get again,” Del Potro said. “I couldn’t hold the trophy in that moment. I was so, so nervous, happy.

“I couldn’t talk to the fans in that moment, like, nine years ago.
“But I have my trophy at home. I like to see that trophy every single day in my home.”
