Jockey Donnacha O’Brien still believes in Saxon Warrior despite some disappointing performances over the summer. The highly-rated three-year-old was an impressive winner of the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket earlier this season but has struggled to replicate that form over recent months, following up a second-place finish in the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown with a below-par display in last week’s Juddmonte International Stakes at York.
Next up for the Aidan O’Brien-trained colt is a potential run in the Qipco Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown next month and Donnacha, who is Aidan’s son, is hopeful the horse can produce his best form in that race, as he has impressed in rides at home over recent days.
“His action and everything was good,” he said. “I was really happy. His work at home has always been very good but we’ve not seen that on the track on his last couple of starts. I hope he can show it at Leopardstown.”
O’Brien certainly has not lost confidence in Saxon Warrior and tipped the colt to enjoy an impressive end to 2018.
The jockey added: “I’ve not lost faith in him, he’s a very good horse and I think he’ll prove that on his next few starts.”
