Perez Takes Share Of Lead In Beau Champ

Victor Perez continued his fine run of form after moving into a share of the lead on day one of the Afrasia Bank Mauritius Open.

World number 134 Perez landed his second Challenge Tour title at last month’s Foshan Open before narrowly missing out on back-to-back wins when finishing second at the Ras Al Khaimah Challenge Tour Grand Final.

The Frenchman, who turned professional in 2015, came into this week’s event off the back of a tie for third at the Hong Kong Open and he continued his rich vein of form at the Four Seasons GC.

Perez made nine birdies and just one bogey to sign for a sensational eight-under-par 64 and he is joined on that mark by Indian S Chikkarangappa, who birdied the 18th hole to climb into a share of the lead.

South African Jaco van Zyl, who is a 14-time Sunshine Tour winner, is a shot off the pace on seven-under and he is joined in third position by Japan’s Masahiro Kawamura and American Kurt Kitayama.

Reacting to his round, Van Zyl said: “It’s the first round of a new season, so it’s really nice to get off to a good, solid start. I played nicely and it was a really nice finish. I was going well and then I finished birdie-eagle.”
