Pope Targets December Return

Goalkeeper Nick Pope says he expects to be fit and ready to play again for Burnley in December. The 26-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough campaign last term, with his performances good enough to earn him a place in England’s squad for the World Cup in Russia.

However, Pope has managed just 14 minutes of football this season, dislocating his shoulder early in the Europa League tie at Aberdeen but after undergoing surgery, is back on the road to recovery.

Clarets’ boss Sean Dyche currently has an embarrassment of riches between the sticks, with Tom Heaton and Joe Hart, who was signed on the back of Pope’s injury, currently fighting it out for the gloves.

The former Charlton man’s return will only boost the boss’ options and with him embracing the difficulties that come as part of his recovery, the Soham-born star says he expects to be back in the fold in December.

Pope, speaking on Soccer AM, said: “I’m looking at December hopefully. Everything since the surgery has gone really well.”

He added: “It’s a new challenge for myself, and that’s the way I’ve got to look at it, and make sure I come back flying.

“It’s a setback, but it’s not the end of the world.
“It’s not season-ending, it’s just something that’s happened and it’s time out to concentrate on working on my game. I can still work on myself and things I could have done better.”
