Red Bull motorsport advisor Dr Helmut Marko says the team will quit Formula 1 if their partnership with Honda fails. The Milton Keynes-based outfit will end their current deal with Renault at the end of the current campaign, with Honda set to provide engines for Red Bull in 2019.
“We are pleased with the great cooperation with Honda for the coming years, and if this cooperation, for whatever reason, does not work as expected, then Red Bull will leave Formula 1,” Marko told Speedweek.
Marko also claimed Honda came close to ending their involvement in Formula 1 after a disastrous partnership with McLaren.
He added: “The cooperation with Honda has been running very well with [Red Bull sister team] Toro Rosso so far.
“After the McLaren disaster, Honda was close to a departure from Formula 1 at the end of 2017 and we really had to convince the Japanese in intensive conversations that they could resume with us to start.”
